Chapter fourteen

Kalli didn’t have time to be amazed at finding Selene alive after all this time. Her brain could make room for only one thought.

“Sam!” Kalli screamed, running from the cave and back into the blinding light. She heard footsteps behind her but didn’t turn to see who had followed. She needed to get to Sam.

She glanced around frantically, hoping to see some sign of him or the direction Eris might have taken him. There was nothing, the parking lot empty except for their rental car. The fight had lasted only a few minutes, but it was obviously long enough for Eris to kidnap Sam.

“Sam,” she said again, tears threatening to choke her.

“Who’s Sam?” Selene asked, coming to stand next to her.

Kalli swallowed down her emotions. “He’s an anthropologist who studies Amazons,” she answered quietly.

“He’s her boyfriend,” Zoe chimed in, coming up on Kalli’s other side.

Kalli rolled her eyes. The term was so juvenile. She was over four thousand years old. There should be a better term for it than boyfriend. Besides, despite what the ache in her heart was telling her, they’d never gotten that far in their relationship. What was between them was so new she had no idea what to call it.

Selene let out a low hum, drawing Kalli’s eyes to meet her friend’s curious green ones. “Boyfriend, huh?” She smiled to take the sting out of her teasing. “What do you think Eris wants with him?”

“The location of Themyscira,” Zoe answered. “He’s spent years studying our culture. Apparently his museum exhibit had a map that gave the general location of our homeland.”

Selene rocked back on her heels, letting out a low whistle. “Eris is trying to go back? Why?”

“That’s a good question,” Kalli said. “But we shouldn’t talk about this here. We need to find a way to haul all this weaponry back to the hotel. I don’t want tourists stumbling on this place and getting hurt.”

By the time they made it back inside the cave Eris's men had vanished, but Kalli could barely bring herself to care. Somehow she managed to oversee the recovery of the weapons cache even though her brain was acting on autopilot. Sam was gone. What could a pile of weapons mean in the face of that?

She helped Zoe and Selene move everything out of the cave and into their vehicles. Between their car and Selene’s, they had plenty of room for everything, even the spears. Thankfully the tourists had disappeared, allowing them to haul their cargo out without being noticed.

Kalli did most of it instinctively, her mind spinning with questions. Where was Sam? What was Eris planning on doing to him? Where would she take him? Was he hurt? She couldn’t even process that she’d let him get kidnapped right out from under her nose.

She’d failed. Again. Sam was gone, and it was all her fault.

She didn’t protest when Zoe took the car keys out of her hand. She vaguely overheard Zoe telling Selene something about a hotel, but before she could process it, she was being led to the car and pushed into the passenger seat.
